World's Smallest Muscial Instrument Plays Super Mario Bros. Theme

The scientists from the University of Twente, in the Netherlands, have created “micronium” a tiny musical instrument made up of microscopic springs activated by combs to produce an audible tone.

Half a dozen tone systems are placed on a chip and then these chips are combined to offer an orchestral range of sounds. The array of chips was hooked up to a computer and placed under a microscope, which then projected an image of the “strings” being plucked onto a screen for an audience to see.

After playing through an original composition for the micronium called, ‘Impromptu No. 1 for Micronium,’ the tiny instrument played one of the most recognizable melodies in the world: ‘Super Mario Bros.’ theme. The “micronium” is the first musical instrument to measure only micrometers across and be audible to humans.
