Ubuntu 11.04 “Natty Narwhal” has been released. It includes many new features, improvements, and a completely revamped Unity interface. Here’s how you can upgrade your Ubuntu 10.10 installation to Ubuntu 11.04.

Installation Steps:
Your system might automatically detect the new version and show you a pop-up notification.

Click “Yes, Upgrade Now” button to continue.

If you don’t get the notification, you can start the upgrade process manually by running the Update Manager (System > Administration > Update Manager) from the menu.

You should see the “New Ubuntu release ‘11.04’ available” notice in the Update Manager window. Click on the “Upgrade” button to start the distribution upgrade.

Next, a window with the release notes for Natty Narwhal comes up.

Proceed again by clicking on upgrade.

Required upgrade tools will then be downloaded.

After completion of that, you will be prompted for your password. Enter that to continue.

Next you will be shown the complete list of packages that are to be downloaded, and the estimated time required to download them.

Click on “Start Upgrade” to begin with the upgrade process.

Update Manager will now start downloading upgrade packages and install them.

Once installation completes, you should remove obsolete packages as part of the cleaning up process.

And finally you are required to restart your computer to complete the upgrade.

That’s it! When you log in, you will get the new Unity desktop.
