How to Customize Blogger Post Permalink

When you write a post in Blogger, the post permalink (permanent link to a blog post) is automatically generated based on the post title. Authors had no control over this. Now thanks to a new feature introduced, you can customize the permalink for your posts to generate SEO friendly URLs. The option is accessible via the “Permalink” option in the Post Settings box.

How to Create Custom Permalink?

Log in to your blogger dashboard and write your content in the post editor as you normally do. Once done, instead of hitting the Publish button, click on ‘Permalink’ Option under ‘Post settings’.

You’ll see that by default Automatic URL option is selected. To create your own keyword rich URL click on the second option: Custom URL. When done, save your changes and publish your post.

Things to note:

  • Allowed characters in a custom URL are limited to: a-z, A-Z, 0-1, _ (underscore), – (dash), and . (period).
  • Permalinks for already published posts cannot be edited. This feature is applicable only to new blog posts.
  • If the permalink you chose already exists, Blogger will find a new one for you.
  • You can customize only the bolded portion of the URL: http://www.yourblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/customURL.html.

Blogging platforms like WordPress and Joomla already had this feature, so it’s a good step ahead by Blogger to provide its users with permalink customization to compete with others.
