Facebook announced a new Timeline profile at yesterday’s f8 Developer Conference.

Facebook will start rolling out this new profile to its 800 million users from September 30. But if you can’t wait that long, you can get this new profile right now, through the developer section of Facebook, by following the below steps.

Here’s how to do it:

Log into Facebook account and search for “Developer App,” or simply navigate to developers.facebook.com/apps.

If it’s the first you are visiting this page, you would get a prompt asking for permission to access your account. Continue by allowing Facebook Developer application.

Now create a new Facebook app by clicking on the “Create New App” button, seen on the top-right corner of the page. Give your app a name, namespace, and agree to the Platform Privacy Policy. Name and namespace can be anything, since this is used only to get approved as a Facebook developer to get the Timeline feature.

Note: Your account must be verified using mobile or credit card before you can create an app.

Next, in your app’s settings page, find the “Open Graph” section and click on the “Get Started using open graph” link.

Create a test action for your app. For example, “watch” a “movie” or “plan” a “trip” or something similar, as long as it goes along the lines with the statement, and click on “Get Started.”

Now you should be taken to the “Action Types” configuration page. Here, continue through all three pages, saving your changes.

That’s it. Go to your profile or homepage and you should see an invitation waiting at the top of the page. Click on “Get it now” and you should have the new Timeline profile. And this is my pretty profile page. 😀

Notice something different other than the Timeline? Yes, now you have a big canvas to show off your prized photograph, creative design skills, or anything you want, instead of thumbnails. My cover image is of 850×314 pixels, if you plan on creating one for your profile. If I find an app to automatically create cover images, be assured that I will post it here.

Final note, Timeline is automatically turned off if you access your Facebook account from a different computer. But you can get it back immediately, by entering this URL into your browser: http://www.facebook.com/yourusername?sk=timeline. Remember to replace “yourusername” with your actual Facebook username.
