Do you get friend requests or messages from unknown people on Facebook? This can be quite annoying. With little tweaks to the Facebook privacy settings you can entirely stop those people from bothering you ever again.

Stopping Friend Request and Messages

Login to your Facebook account and click on the down arrow at the top-right corner of the page to open Privacy Settings, or directly go to this url: https://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy.

Scroll down the Privacy Settings page and find How You Connect and click on the Edit Settings link.

This should open up a pop-up with the following options:

  • Who can look you up using the email address or phone number you provided?
  • Who can send you friend requests?
  • Who can send you Facebook messages?

Here narrow down Facebook connections circle from Everyone to Friends for each option. This will stop unknown people from sending you unsolicited messages. Ability to send you friend requests can be set to maximum Friend of Friends.

That will stop people from contacting or requesting you. Now to make your contact details are not visible to unwanted Facebook users, head over to your profile info page and check privacy of each of your contact information.

Adjust the privacy settings to fit your level of comfort. You can make information visible (or invisible) to a specific person or list here. Don’t set any info to Public or Friend of Friends.

Once you are done with all the settings, use the “View As…” feature (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?viewas=100000686899395) on your profile to see what information is visible to the public or a specific Facebook user.

This was how you can stop unwanted people from contacting you. Facebook has lots of other settings that will allow you to fine tune your privacy settings exactly the way you want. Go through them, if you haven’t already.
