Voice Search extension for Google Chrome allows you to quickly search the web using your voice input, just like on Android.
The extension uses an experimental Chrome feature called form speech input and you need to have a built-in or an external microphone to use it. The feature is enabled by default in the dev channel build, but it can also be manually enabled in the beta build by adding “--enable-speech-input
” command-line flag.
It comes preloaded with search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, WikiPedia, Wolfram Alpha, YouTube and more but you can also add your own custom search engines. It also integrates a speech input button for all websites using HTML5 search boxes.
After installing the extension, it displays the Google Voice microphone logo in the toolbar. Clicking the logo will open a menu showing the supported search engines and websites. A second click turns the microphone into a red logo and puts the app into listen mode.
It also adds a microphone icon at the end of the search box in Google [as seen in above image], Yahoo, Bing and other search engines. Click the icon, speak the words or phrase you want to search and the extension will search the same words on the search engine.
To conclude, the feature works well as long as English is the target language and your pronunciation is clear.
