Carry a Portable Cloud Storage Client on your Flash Drive

In an earlier post I had written about an online service called Otixo, which provides users with a single interface for managing all of their cloud services in one location. That’s an efficient way to manage data if you are using multiple cloud service. In this post I have something similar for you, but in the form of a portable desktop application that you can carry in your flash drive.

The application is called CarotDAV. It’s a free software that lets you manage several cloud accounts from the same program. As far as support goes, it can communicate with Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive, Box, SugarSync, as well as WebDAV, FTP, and IMAP protocols. You can use it to manage all your cloud data without having to login through a web browser. Do note that the program is not a synchronization tool, so you cannot use it to keep your files in sync with those in the cloud.

How to Use

First download CarotDAV from the developer’s website. The program is available both as an installer and as a standalone program. Both versions come with the same features, but to carry it on your flash drive, choose the latter.
CarotDAV

On running, you will see an interface as in the above image. To add one or more of your accounts, click on File > New Connection > select a service. This will open the Connection Setting dialog.

Click on the Authorize button you see in the General tab to open the Web Authorization dialog. In that dialog, you’ll get a special link with a token that is used to connect the client with your account.

Wherever available, CarotDAV connects with cloud services using OAuth authorization, so you don’t have to worry about handing over your login credentials.

After connecting, check if everything is working fine by clicking on the Test button. If the test was successful, click OK to add the account.

The account is now listed in the main interface. Double-click on it to view your files and folders stored on the service. To download something, right-click on the item and choose download, and to upload, click on the upload button and select file(s) or folder(s) on the computer. File management functions such as cut, copy, paste, etc. are also supported with both mouse and keyboard.

You can add as many accounts as you like, including multiple accounts of the same service. Although, at a time you can access only one account in one interface. For accessing multiple accounts simultaneously run a new instance of the program.

To keep your accounts and files safe, the program has a master password feature. Enable it to keep unauthorized users out. You can also encrypt data with a key before uploading.

CarotDAV works on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.
